POLITICAL-ADMINISTRATIVE EVOLUTION OF SAN MIGUEL DE SALINAS

The nineteenth century is the century in which the old regime breaks down and with it a whole system of life and ideas provoking a series of convulsions and crises that reach our days.

The nineteenth century is characterized by a minority of people trying to achieve a great technical level and wealth every day greater.

In this century the contemporary history of Spain was born and with it, many urban centers, which had hitherto depended on their party heads, gained independence.

One of these villages was San Miguel del Campo, which at the end of the eighteenth century had about 300 neighbors dedicated almost entirely to the exercise of agriculture, because «the soil is so fertile that still almost abandoned partly because of lack of arms, If there are timely rainfall, it produces much wheat, barley, barilla, and a great quantity of wine and oil. «

In the shadow of the Constitution of 1812, San Miguel de Salinas breaks the dependency that it united with Orihuela, throughout all the Modern Age, and in 1813 has its first independent City council.

The return of Fernando VII, after the end of the War of Independence, ended this Spanish administrative dawn, a Royal Decree of July 30, 1814 suppressed the Constitutional Councils.

1822: SAN MIGUEL AND ITS FIRST MUNICIPAL TERM
The negotiations were not easy; The city council of Orihuela was very willing not to give, before this it was necessary to appeal to the Diputación Provincial of Murcia by means of three consecutive offices in the days 7, 14 and 25 of May of 1822, of which the Diputación murcia On June 18, adopting in the session of the previous day «the peremptory measure for the segregation and signaling of term to the Villa de San Miguel de Salinas.»

At the same session on June 17, the Diputación de Murcia appointed a commissioner to sign the term to Juan Pedro Dato Rosique, dean of the lawyers of Murcia.

On August 21, 1822, the commissioner arrived in San Miguel, staying in the house of the wealthy farmer Ramon Gimenez, shortly afterwards came the commissioners-deputies of the towns of Almoradí, Torrevieja and Jacarilla, but not those of Orihuela, despite The summons given them by the Political Government of the Province, so that the Provincial ordered its commissioner to carry out its task and proceeded to the demarcation of the lands that would constitute the first term of San Miguel, being completed on August 30 .

At the moment, San Miguel counted on an absolute population of 2,018 souls, soon after this population began to decrease, without returning to reach this quota until beginnings of Century XX.

1823: MUNICIPAL BUDGET: ITS IMPACT

With the new year the new mayor is inaugurated in San Miguel, in December of 1822 Manuel Ferrer was chosen, taking on the position of Secretary, Domingo Areujo; Complying with what is laid down by law, the Municipal Budget is sent in January 1823 to the Provincial Council of Murcia, which on March 12 sends its approval in the following concepts:

Also the Diputación gives the approval to the use of herbs. Faced with the expensive environment that is lived at this time, Orihuela sends 50 men from the army to preserve the «Homeland» and at the same time the Constitution.

1823: THE COAST

The attainment of the municipal term gives rise to innumerable problems. As we are awarded a few kilometers of coastline and smuggling in full swing, we are notified from Orihuela that we must protect ourselves from it and avoid it as much as possible because of the damage caused to the Public Treasury.

The truth was that most of the contraband, especially of tobacco, entered through the part of coast that belonged to us, and to which were dedicated enough neighbors of San Miguel.

On September 4 a liberal landing takes place in Torrevieja, Guardamar, El Pinet and La Marina. The alarm soon springs by Orihuela and it is decided that a cordon of armed people of all the towns of the demarcation, corresponding to San Miguel 75, but almost without being organized, arises a constitutionalist attack and they land in Torrevieja many of its personnel , Forcing the men covering the post to retire.

Although victorious the invading group, had to withdraw by the lack of support of the premises.

Later the liberal rebels gathered in Gibraltar decided to attack the coast.

Colonel Francisco Catarla is sent to defend Torre de la Horadada, Torre de Cabo Cervera, Torre de Cabo Roig and Guardamar.

These troops were supplied from nearby villages and San Miguel was to contribute 20 rations of bread to the Cabo Roig troop.

But when all this happened, Fernando VII had already canceled the privileges that had been obtained in San Miguel.

As a result of all this we had to follow more than 100 years depending on Orihuela.

1826: THE EARTHQUAKE

The stage that we could call splendor initiated by San Miguel in 1820, received a brake with the publication of 1º of October of 1823 and was totally truncated with the catastrophic end of decade of the 20.

On September 13, 1928 the earth trembled without San Miguel being noticed. On the night of 14 to 15, the shaking was very strong, causing damage in Lorca, Orihuela and especially in Torrevieja, breaking some towers and leaving many wells without water.

Until January 15, 1829, the tremors continued, and on the following day the intensity was reduced, but on the tenth day, Saturday, March 21, when a tremendous earthquake of 10.5 degrees shook the city.

The ares that covered was tremendous: Rojales, Benejuzar and Torrevieja.

We must start in our area is one of the safest possibilities of the great earthquake, being a zone of constant changes and be subject to the caprice of telluric forces.

The first aid, for our area, came from the Royal House, something very rare, given the character of our neighbors.

1836: NEW AND DEFINITIVE TOWN HALL

The 29 of September of 1833, died Fernando VII, Spain enters in another stage. Conscious of the advantages of which he could enjoy autonomy, San Miguel asks for independence, and after several meetings with Orihuela, everything remains the same until 1896, in which, by a law of August 24, orders to proceed The rectification of booklets evaluating rustic and livestock wealth, forming a cadastre of crops and a fiscal register of rustic and livestock means, of all the municipal terms of Spain.

San Miguel thinks that it has a new way open to request its independence again, but again the answer is negative.

1837: RECORD FOR JUSTIFYING THE MUNICIPAL TERM THAT IN 1822 WAS GRANTED TO THIS MUNICIPALITY
1945-1955: LAST AND DEFINITIVE ATTEMPT

At the beginning of 1945, the City council of San Miguel, presided over by Jose Andrea Zapata, goes to the Civil Government requesting for the umpteenth time the term that corresponded to him.

Here began a long process that culminated ten years later under the mayoralty of Joaquín Martínez Pérez, when by Decree of March 4, 1955 was approved the segregation of part of the municipality of Orihuela and its subsequent aggregation to that of San Miguel de Salinas , The demarcation being made on April 20, 1
